Sept. 27th 2014 Eve Of Destruction/Championships

By Jason D Searcy

September 27, 2014 – Elko, MN

The final three Champions of 2014 were crowned in front of a full house on a beautiful September night during Eve of Destruction at Elko Speedway.

Michael Ostdiek from Lakeville (MN) won the Great North Legends feature event after a furious battle with Tim Brockhouse.  Benny Van Cleve held the early lead until Ostdiek, the 2013 Elko Speedway driver of the year, took over on lap 3 of the 20 lap main event.  Ostdiek spent the rest of the race battling with Brockhouse for the win, eventually winning by .203 seconds.

The Great North Legends point Championship was up for grabs all night long.  Derek Lemke held an 8 point lead coming into the race night, Brady Fox-Rhode cut that margain to 4pts after setting a new track record time in qualifying of 15.682 seconds or 86.086 mph.  Lemke then beat Fox-Rhode in the heat race and increased his lead to 11 points going into the feature event.  Fox-Rhode was making his way from his mid-pack starting spot to the front when the engine let loose and ending his chance for the Championship.  With the pressure off, Lemke raced up to the 5th position and won the Championship by 23 points.  “It was a great year, it was decorated with some wins and some wrecks and some mechanical failures,” said Lemke “I’m glad we won the Championship, I’ve always wanted a banner hanging up in Champions.”

The Mini Stock feature event saw Julie Davis from Bloomington (MN) lead early, then Ridge Oien from Bloomington (MN) took the top spot on lap 7.  Oien fought off Matt Suhl who came from the 9th starting position all the way up to second.  Oien won the 15 lap race by .218 seconds for his second consecutive win in the Mini Stock division.

The Point Championship went to Brian Adams from Shakopee (MN), Adam scored 6 feature wins this season and he only had to start the heat and feature to secure enough points to clinch the title.  “To make this happen you have to be consistent each week and take it one race at a time,” said Adams “I did my best and it came to my favor.”  Adams won the title by 52 points.

The runner-up in points ended up being a tie between Michael Wachs Jr and Brandon Plekkenpol both from Shakopee (MN), Wachs got the position on the tie-breaker with his two feature wins in 2014.

Owen Giles from New Market (MN) won the Bandoleros feature race but Brody Wulf from Lakeville (MN) won the point title over Giles by 6 points.  After the main event Brody saluted his recently passed Grandfather by wearing a driving suit his Grandfather wore when he raced at Elko Speedway many years ago.  “It feels like I accomplished something really big, it helps me get through not having my grandfather here, it helps a lot” said Wulf.

Many other special Eve of Destruction events were held on the last race night of the year including a Flag Pole race that was won by Ashley Bell from Lester Prairie (MN). To get full results and points go to www.ElkoSpeedway.com and click RESULTS.

The crowd was also entertained by School bus races, a motorcycle stunt team, spectator drags and a wild figure 8 trailer race.  Doug Rose melted a car with his Green Mamba Jet car and the night was capped with a fireworks display.

Next up at Elko Speedway is the Champions Banquet that will be at Champions Event Center on Saturday night October 18th with music by Johnny Holm.  2015 will mark the 50th year of operation at Elko Speedway.
