August 14, 2021 – Elko, MN

By Jason D Searcy

It was a NASCAR sanctioned race night at Elko Speedway on Saturday night with double features in all five divisions.

Twenty-three cars started the first 25 lap Late Model feature sponsored by The Car Lot of New Prague, #19 Michael Haggar from Hanover (MN) took the lead from the green flag, he held the top spot the entire race but the race night was anything but easy. Haggar struggled with shock problems in practice then blew a hole in his radiator, his crew just barely got a new one installed before qualifying. His car performed flawlessly during the race but 8th starting Billy Mohn shot through the field and challenged Haggar for the win on the last lap. Haggar held his ground and won the race to the checkers by just 0.101 seconds, it was his first win of the season at ELKO. Billy Mohn was second, #40 Michael Beamish third, #5 Will McCully fourth and #18 Michael Ostdiek fifth. Point leader Jacob Goede finished 8th and second in points #52 Chad Walen was 13th, fast-qualifier and local legend #41 Donny Reuvers started 22nd and finished 12th during this cautionless race.

In the second NASCAR Late Model feature at Elko Speedway #52 Chad Walen took the early lead until #6 Owin Giles from New Market (MN) went side by side with him on lap 8 and finally became the leader with an inside pass on lap 11. It looked like Giles was going to run away with the win until a caution happened with just 6 laps to go, on the restart Walen took the top spot back but Giles passed him back with 3 laps remaining, he won by 0.989 seconds, it was the first win of the season for Giles. Chad Walen finished second, #81 Bryan Syer-Keske was third, #13 Bryan Wrolstad fourth and #21 Adam Bendzick fifth, point leader Jacob Goede finished 7th of the 23 cars entered.

Jacob Goede now has a 73 point lead over Chad Walen in the race for the 2021 Elko Speedway Late Model Championship. Jacob Goede is second in NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Hometracks point standings and Billy Mohn is currently 5th, the large car counts in the Late Model division give ELKO drivers the opportunity to earn maximum points in the National standings.

The Genz-Ryan Thunder car division raced two 20 lap features Saturday night at Elko Speedway. In the first feature #20 Dave Robinson took the early lead, then just after the halfway mark #9 Adam Wiebusch got side-by-side and then took over the top spot on lap 14. Conrad Jorgenson #3 from Lakeville (MN) started the race 8th and moved up through the field, he jumped up to the high-side of Wiebusch and took over the lead with just a few laps remaining, eventually stretching his lead to 0.426 seconds at the finish line, it was his 7th feature win of the season at ELKO. Adam Wiebusch finished second, fast-qualifier #07 Dillon Sellner third, Dave Robinson fourth and #41 Ben Gannon fifth of the twelve cars entered.

The second Thunder car feature event had #14 Tony Holm and #8 Taylor Goldman raced wheel to wheel for the top spot, Goldman finally established herself as the leader on lap 5 of 20. It was the third win of the season for Robby Carter. Tim Brockhouse finished second, #8 Colin Stocker third, #72 Jon Lemke fourth and fast qualifier #47 Austin Jahr had mechanical problems just before the race, he started 18th but raced his way up to fifth at the finish during this cautionless race.

A yellow flag flew for #8 Colin Stocker a couple laps later, then after the restart veteran driver #71 Jon Lemke from Savage (MN) shot to the lead. Another caution took place on lap 12 but Lemke retook the lead and then had a furious battle on the last lap, #47 Austin Jahr dove down low out of corner #4 and finished just inches behind Lemke at the stripe. Fast qualifier #88 Nick Oxborough started the race eighth and worked his way up to the front late, Oxborough charged up on the inside and challenged Hamilton for the win on the last lap. Paul Hamilton won the drag race to the finish line, he won in a photo finish by just 0.015 seconds, it was the first win of the season for Hamilton and extra special timing because his grandson Clayton Dorner also won tonight in the Bando division. Oxborough was second, #83 Julie Jorgenson third, Eric Montour fourth and #08 Mike Stoer fifth of the 13 cars entered.

The second 20 lap Power Stock feature had Rookie driver #3 Jimmie Jorgenson lead most of the race, Jimmie is the brother of #83 Julie Jorgenson and son of ELKO legend #3 Conrad Jorgenson. The Power Stocks did not race last week and that was good timing for #88 Nick Oxborough from Lakeville (MN) who was involved in a huge wreck last time they raced, his car was severely damaged both front and back causing a lot of extra work for his crew during the off week just to get his car back on the track. Oxborough started the race 8th and drove his way through the field catching the leader on lap 17, Oxborough faked high then shot down low down the backstretch and took over the lead coming to lap 18, he held onto the top spot and extended his advantage, winning by 1.209 seconds, it was his fourth win of the season. Jimmie Jorgenson was second, #66 Joe Prusak third, #08 Mike Stoer fourth and #83 Julie Jorgenson fifth of the 13 cars entered.

Ayrton Brockhouse #12 from Shakopee (MN) drove to the front on lap 5 then a caution happened and slowed the 11 car field at the halfway mark. Danny Mann was second, Jackson Kottschade was third, Ayden Brockhouse #13 was fourth and #56 Clayton Dorner fifth. It was the fifth consecutive win to start the season for Ayrton Brockhouse.
