NASCAR Whelen All American Series Opening Night

Elko MN, – May 18, 2013

The Whelen All American series asphalt opening night at Elko Speedway will be one not easily forgotten with great racing, close finishes and memorable crashes.
New tires at the beginning of the season makes for quick qualifying times, many time Elko Champion Donny Reuvers set down a blistering lap of 13.778, that is over 97 mph on the high banked 3/8 mile track at Elko Speedway.
A strong field of 18 Super Late Model cars raced the 40 lap feature, Billy Mohn lead much of the race until experiencing electrical problems and did not finish.
With 6 laps to go Paul Paine was involved in a spectacular crash in which his car rode the wall on two wheels from the flag stand, down the front stretch and finally stopping in corner one.
“What a way to start the year off,” said Chad Walen from Prior Lake (MN), who won the feature after holding off Adam Royle and Donny Reuvers on numerous restarts late in the race.  “Our hopes were high tonight, we built a brand new car and it performed great” said Walen.
Brent Kane from Lonsdale (MN) won the 14 car main event for the Thunder Car division after working his way from mid-pack to front and missing the wrecks in front of him.  “I had a clear head, Nate had the car set up so well the car just turned itself.  I was fortunate and lucky to not be caught up in any of the crashes” said Kane.  Brent dedicated this win to his childhood hero Dick Trickle who died on Thursday at the age of 71.  “It was pretty touching when we got the checkered flag,” said Kane “I got a lump in my throat and drove slow so everyone could see the #99.”
Nicholas Beaver from Rosemount (MN) won the 11 car main event in the Big 8 division.
John Lebens from Shakopee (MN) won a tightly contested feature in the Power Stock division, just edging Paul Hamilton by .142 seconds at the finish line.
Dirk Henry from Sauk Centre (MN) was awarded the victory in the Great North Legends race, four drivers were disqualified in post race inspection.
The first Eve of Destruction RAW event of the 2013 season is Saturday night May 25th.  6 divisions of racing with double features in the Super Late Models, Big 8, Thunder Cars and Legends.  School Bus races, Rolling Thunder Monster truck, Vertical Mischief freestyle motocross, Flag pole race, Mechanical bull, Lumberjack exhibition, Free carnival rides and more.  Tracy Blake Project band performs in Champions bar after the event.
