Championship & Final Eve Of Destruction 2013

Elko, MN – September 28, 2013

By Jason D Searcy

The final night of racing in 2013 started with rain showers but that did not dampen the spirits of the huge crowd to witness the Racing and Wrecking at Elko Speedway. Jeff Belzer’s Chevy, Dodge and Kia sponsored a wild and crazy Eve of Destruction RAW event to end the 2013 season.

Three Champions were crowned in racing with 16 year old Michael Ostdiek of Lakeville (MN) winning his 9th feature event of the season and his first Championship in the Great North Legends division. “This is the best year I’ve ever had in racing, “said Ostdiek “I’ve been racing since I was five, and nothing beats this.” Ostdiek edged Derek Lemke by just .032 seconds in the 22 car feature event and he also beat out Lemke by 51 points in the final standings. Ostdiek said they plan on keeping the Legends car but have some thoughts of moving up to the BIG 8 division in 2014.

Jack Purcell from Bloomington (MN) took home the hardware again in the Mini Stock division, its his third straight championship at Elko Speedway. “This one was a lot more close cut,” said Purcell “the points battle was a lot closer towards the end, so I had to work harder and stay clean.” Purcell finished just ahead of Ridge Oien and Dan Knish in the 26 car Mini Stock feature race. Purcell won the championship by 32 points over John Vandenheuvel in the season ending standings. Purcell is ready to move up a division for 2014, “we bought a Thunder Car, so we will rebuild it over the winter and have some fun next year” said Purcell.

Tyler Kingery from Prior Lake (MN) won both the heat and feature races in the Bandoleros division on Saturday night but Jared Duda from St Michael (MN) was the overall points champion. Duda won by 34 points over Cole Klein for the 2013 crowd.

Doug Rose and the Green Mamba Jet car melted two cars and Jim Burns in the Mechanical Mischief Monster Truck put on a great show for the crowd.

The Figure 8 bus race was a big hit as always and the Figure 8 Trailer race was one to remember with boats, snowmobiles and debris scattered all over the 3/8th mile track at Elko Speedway.

The Flag pole race was won by T J Christensen from Bloomington (MN).

Mike Tuma won the burnout contest in a 1964 Econoline Van and the spectator drags were a crowd favorite with over 30 cars entered. Terry Gilomen was the winner in the stock division driving a Oldsmobile 98 to the win.

Dangerous Dan McCarthy drove a school bus into another school bus that was standing on end, he landed that bus exactly on top of the bus he was driving. It was one of those moments that had to be seen to be believed and a perfect way to end the incredible 2013 season at Elko Speedway.

The next event will be the season ending awards banquet at Champions bar at Elko Speedway on Saturday October 12th with music by Hitchville after the program which begins at 6pm.

Race fans are invited to follow along on social media during the off season. Search Elko Speedway on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube or go to www.elkospeedway.com, call for more information at (952) 461-7223.
