SCHULTZ HOLDS OFF ROYLE IN ELKO THRILLER

Attention: open in a new window.

Elko, MN June 20, 2009--Despite running a limited schedule, New Market's Steve Schultz made the most of his steve_schultzopportunity Saturday June 20th as he parlayed his pole position into an early lead and looked untouchable at times before point leader Adam Royle of Northfield reeled him in over a 15 lap charge, setting up a final lap showdown that saw Schultz edge Royle by inches to score the NASCAR Super Late Model win, highlighting the NASCAR Whelen All American Series action Saturday June 20, 2009 at Elko Speedway.

In the 40 lap Super Late Model main, the action was slow to start as an opening lap caution flew as Eagan's Ryan Johnson slammed hard into the turn three wall as he tried to avoid a spinning Mark Lamoreaux, ending Johnson's night. As the green flew for the second time, Steve Schultz out ran Lakeville's Billy Mohn to take the point, only to see the caution fly on lap four as Lakeville's Conrad Jorgenson lost his hood and was subsequently looped by Bloomington's Tom Quade who had no where to go.

After a quick cleanup, the action went back under the green with Schultz pulling away from Mohn, with Lakeville's Steve Anderson battling with Chaska's Dean Cornelius and Northfield's Adam Royle for a top three position. As the action remained under the green, Schultz looked to be untouchable as he built a 9 car length advantage only to see Royle get around Cornelius and Anderson before dispatching Mohn for second as the crossed flags signaled the midpoint of the action. It was in the second 20 laps that things got interesting as Royle slowly but steadily cut into Schultz' lead, pulling side by side as the white flew. On the final lap, Royle lost a bit of bite in turns one and two and as the fans began to rise, the duo crossed the start/finish line inches apart with Schultz holding on for the win, with Royle second, Dundas' Donny Reuvers third after tracking down Cornelius on lap 39 with Anderson rounding out the top five.

kevin_lutzIn the Big 8 Sportsman division, Lakeville's Kevin Lutz drove like "a man possessed" as he dominated the Heat race action before taking the early feature lead from Prior Lake's Nick Barstad. Once at the point, the only question appeared to be what would Lutz' margin of victory be and it turned out to be 10 car lengths as he dominated the division's action with Northfield's Dylan Moore scoring a career best runner-up finish and Farmington's Dan Pat Ryan, Jr. third after making the nights best save as he tagged the front stretch wall 20 laps in and somehow regained control of his ride.

In the Thunder Cars, Nerstrand's Kris Morelan got the early jump on New Market's Scott King before the caution flew on lap four as Lakeville's Kyle Sellner and Dundas' Ted Reuvers locked horns in turn one, with Sellner tagging the wall and Reuvers scrambling down pit road with two flats.daryl_blohm On the ensuing restart, Lakeville's Chris Marek roared around Morelan for the lead only to pull to the infield five laps later with mechanical issues putting Morelan back in front, but his lead would be short-lived as Elko's Daryl Blohm took the lead on lap 11 and drove away for the win, with Faribault's Jack Paulson and Lonsdale's Brent Kane second and third as Morelan became loose in the final stages of action.

The Great North Legends saw Sauk Center's Dirk Henry dominate the action as he followed up an early night heat win, by outpacing the field and then holding off a determined charge by Prior Lake's Jaycen Brockhouse to complete the "clean sweep" with 15 year old hot shoe Dillon Boggess of Belle Plaine roaring home third.

The Power Stocks put on a great display of side by side action during their 20 lap main, with Rosemount's Jay Seiler and Jordan's Luke Schmitt battling tooth and nail for the lead. Seiler finally took the point for good on lap 11 and jay_seilerlooked to secure the win only to see Shakopee's James Wiebusch lose his motor on the final lap, forcing a green, white, checkered restart. In the end, it didn't matter as Seiler held on for the win, with Elko's Greg Lamont edging Schmitt at the line for second and third.

Topping off the action were the Super Hornets and on this night, the checkers and honors belonged to Medford's Shawn Grabinger who dominated the 15 lap main, leading wire to wire with Lonsdale's Jeremy Brainerd second and Burnsville's Aaron Hopkins third.shawn_grabinger
