DOUBLE FILE RESTARTS DOUBLE THE EXCITEMENT FOR RACE FANS AT ELKO SPEEDWAY!
Elko New Market, MN – 8/28/2010 A large contingent of Elko Speedway race fans reacted in a very positive fashion Saturday night after the track reinstituted double file restarts for the top divisions. Super Late Model winner Danny Fredrickson was tested several times during the 40-lap feature. However, the Big 8’s flew through two caution free 25-lap features, leaving the restarts untested. Elko New Market’s Steve Schultz and Northfield’s Dylan Moore claimed wins while Lakeville’s Chris Marek survived a last turn skirmish to take the checkered in the ASA Midwest Sportsman 35-lap affair. The fans witnessed heat and feature sweeps posted by both Eric Campbell of Shakopee in the
Power Stock division and Webster’s Tim Brockhouse in the Legend cars. Aaron Hopkins of Burnsville took top honors in the 15-lap Super Hornet clash.
Fredrickson started from the outside of the front row, quickly grabbing the lead from pole-sitter Bryan Roach of Goodhue. Lakeville’s Steve Anderson was able to clear Roach a couple laps into the race to move into the second spot. A caution five laps into the USG-40 brought out the first test of the night with the new double file restarts. Fredrickson proved right off the get-go that he’d be tested but not bested with the new procedure, surviving all three cautions finding restarts on the outside of the front row to
his liking. The final restart came with just 5 laps left and hard charging Matt Goede of New Germany on the inside. Goede’s best shot wasn’t enough as he settled for second. Lonsdale’s Adam Royle charged from his ninth starting position to claim third, while fast qualifier Donny Reuvers of Dundas challenged Royle during the final circuits, finally settling for fourth. Elko New Market’s Jason Schneider held of Anderson to claim 5th place.
The top five chargers all posted top five finishes in both USG-25’s for the Big 8’s. Schultz guided his mount from the sixth starting spot to an early lead, never looking back in the first 25 circuits. Moore closed in on Schultz in the late going but wound up a half-second behind at the finish line. Doug Brown of Prior Lake showed plenty of patience starting from 9th in a virtual traffic jam and finally breaking free on the last lap to claim third, followed closely across the line by
Farmington’s Tom Kamish and Prior Lake’s Nick Barstad. Moore would follow up on Schultz’s example in the second 25-lapper, gaining the early lead and posting a convincing win over Schultz. Brown, Kamish and Barstad would once again round out the top five.
A last turn of the last lap skirmish allowed Marek to claim the win in the ASA Midwest Sportsman 35-lap event. Lonsdale’s Brent Kane looked to have a heat/feature sweep in hand entering the final turn. However, the lapped car of Jay Kalbus of Watertown, WI plowed into the side of Kane’s mount allowing Marek to sneak by for the win. Kane saved the car and had to settle for 2nd, followed by Jack Paulson
of Faribault, and Conrad Jorgenson and Scott King, both of Lakeville. The win allowed Marek to grab the point lead in the traveling series.
Campbell’s Power Stock USG-20 win didn’t come as easy as the heat win he posted earlier in the night. Paul Hamilton of Hastings battled Campbell in the early going and once Campbell wrestled away the lead, Hamilton stayed on the back bumper of the front runner throughout the main event settling for the runner-up spot just a half-second back. Taylor Goldman of Minnetonka won the hard fought battle for third with Lakeville’s Josiah King finishing fourth and Chris Sjulstad of Northfield fifth.
Brockhouse was able to get by young charger Derek Lemke of Shakopee in the late laps of the Legend Cars USG-20 to
claim the heat and feature sweep. Lemke crossed the line within a half-second of Brockhouse with hard charging Bryan Syer-Keske of Lakeville settling for third. Doug Brown did double duty in driving Kim Kraus’ car to an impressive 4th place finish in front of another young charger, Matt Ostdiek of Lakeville. Ostdiek’s even younger brother Michael made his Legend Car debut with an impressive 10th place finish while staying on the lead lap.
It took just a couple of laps for Hopkins to move his ride from the sixth starting spot to the front of the field in the USG Super Hornet 15. Brandon Elmer of Minneapolis, who picked off the earlier heat win, didn’t have enough for Hopkins in the feature and settled for second. Zach Schelhaas of New Prague rode home in third, followed by Shakopee’s
Kevin Anderson and Medford’s Shawn Grabinger.
