"OUR KIDS have so much fun coming to Elko Speedway for EVE OF DESTRUCTION. We love it!"
—Mary, Minneapolis
Topping the action was Dundas' Donny Reuvers who edged Matt Goede in the NASCAR Super Late Models, while New Market's Steve Schultz topped point leader Doug Brown in the Big 8 Sportsman and Forest Lake's Craig Bennett charged home to a wire to wire victory in the Thunder Cars. Leading off the action were the NASCAR Super Late Models and after
a sizzling qualifying session that saw two-time Elko champion Brian Johnson set the standard with a 13.821 second clocking (97.677 mph), Reuvers and Adam Royle topped the Semi Features to set the stage for the 40 lap headliner. At the drop of the green, Bryan Roach took the early lead over David Fredrickson with Billy Mohn, Brian Johnson, Steve Anderson, Matt Goede, Adam Royle and Donny Reuvers freight training Fredrickson back to eighth by lap eight. As Roach continued to set the pace, Johnson slid under Mohn for second before the fast qualifier moved around Roach for the lead on lap 14 before the caution flew on lap 15 for a spinning Mohn. On the restart, Johnson looked to extend his lead over Roach as Reuvers and Goede came to life, sliding past Anderson to join the top four before a second caution flew for a spinning Roach on lap 21.
Following a second restart, Johnson again paced the action before Mohn broke a spindle, losing a tire and tagged the turn one wall to force a third caution on lap 24. Following the third restart, Reuvers and Goede tracked down Johnson on lap 26 to move to first and second where the tandem would battle through a final caution and over the final 14 laps, Reuvers would use the inside line to keep Goede at bay, enroute to the win with Johnson third, Adam Royle fourth and Jason Schneider edging Anderson for fifth.
In the Big 8 Sportsman, Josh Christy in his first Elko start paced the first three laps before veteran Steve Schultz and young hotshoe Nick Barstad moved by on lap four. As Schultz began to stretch out his advantage in his first Big 8 start of the season, point leader Doug Brown moved by Barstad for second on lap 14, with Tom Kamish joining the top three on lap 24. As the action remained "clean and green", the field was unable to track down Schultz who rolled to the win, with Brown second, Kamish third, Barstad fourth and Travis Stanley fifth.
In the Thunder Cars, Forest Lake's Craig Bennett who's had an action packed "rookie" season put all of the struggles behind him as he led wire to wire to score his first feature win of 2010 in the 25 lap main, with Brent Kane and Jack Paulson charging late in the action to join the top three, with Kyle Kirberger fourth and Ted Reuvers fifth.
The Power Stocks also had an action packed 20 lap main that saw Paul Hamilton lead the opening six laps before Jason Novak edged by on lap seven to take the lead, with Dillon Sellner and Rob Schnickels joining in the hunt. Over the final 13 markers, Sellner moved to the bumper of Novak, but couldn't make the pass as Novak powered his way to the win, with Sellner, Schnickels, Dustin Mann and Josiah King rounding out the top five.
The Figure Eights had two chances to delight the crowd and in the first 15 lapper, Scott Westphal led the opening nine laps before he spun on lap 10, putting Dave Nogle in the "cat birds seat", as he led the final five laps to earn the win with Ricky Martin, Danny Johnson, Dennis Barta and Todd Wilson following him across the stripe. The second chance for this field was in a "double flag pole race" and as the fans roared their approval, Ricky Martin showed his prowess in taking the checkers over Johnson, with Barta edging Wilson at the stripe to earn a top three.
Along with the Monster Trucks Felon and Bounty Hunter, the vocal crowd also witnessed Minnetonka's Taylor "Roller Girl"
Goldman defend her title in the Outhouse race, while Fargo, ND's Dan Jacobson topped the rollover contest and Farmington's Eric Thigpen won the Spectator Drags ending an action packed night!
The NASCAR Whelen All American Series at Elko Speedway continues on Saturday August 7, 2010 with the Dwain Behrens Memorial 40 for the NASCAR Super Late Models highlighting the action with gates opening at 5pm, qualifying at 6pm and green flag action at 7pm.
