BLOHM ROLLS TO THUNDER CAR VICTORY AT ELKO SPEEDWAY

Attention: open in a new window.

On a night designated as a "support division" for the travelling ASA Midwest Tour, Elko's Daryl Blohm impressed the good sized crowd of race fans by dominating an all green 25-lap Thunder daryl_blohmCar feature Saturday night at Elko Speedway. Matt Wiebusch of Shakopee pulled off a "double" by winning both a heat race and then finding victory lane in the Power Stock 20 while Sauk Centre's Dirk Henry posted the 20-lap Legends feature win and Jeremy Brainerd of Lonsdale motored to the win in an all green Super Hornet 15-lap feature.

Tight side-by-side racing in the early stages of the Thunder Car feature allowed Blohm to pull into a comfortable lead. Lonsdale's Brent Kane finally broke from the pack that included Nerstrand's Kristopher Morelan, Ted Reuvers of Dundas and Chris Marek of Lakeville. It was too little too late for the charging Kane as he attempted to catch Jack Paulson of Faribault in the late stages of the race. Blohm crossed the line almost two seconds ahead of Paulson, followed by Kane, Marek and Reuvers.

Wiebusch also posted a dominating night of racing. After chalking up a heat win by a full second over the rest of the field, Wiebusch withstood only a first lap yellow flag on his way to the featurematt_wiebusch win. He worked his way to the front after early leader Luke Schmitt of Jordan retired to the pits on the third circuit. Wiebusch methodically clicked off laps in winning by over three seconds to runner-up Rob Schnichels of Elko, with Tom Doten of St. Paul finishing third, Rosemount's Mike Meszaros fourth and Kelly Wefel of Dundas fifth.

The Legends 20-lap feature was marred by a multi-car lap two crash that sent Belle Plaine's Todd Tracy hard into the turn three wall. No injuries were reported, however four cars were forced to retire for the night. Henry was able to build up an impressive lead before Jaycen Brockhouse of Prior Lake was able to free himself of dirk_henrythe heavy traffic. Brockhouse needed more time as Henry posted a half-second win with Dillon Boggess of Belle Plaine third, Lakeville's Gene Traxler fourth and Michael Dick of St. Michael fifth.

The top five finishers in the Super Hornet heat race would simply change positions in the feature finish. Brainerd would lead all the way in posting the win, followed across the line by Shawn Grabinger of Medford. The close battle for third went to heat race winner Jason Miner of Shakopee in front of fourth place finisher Richard Thake of Lakeville and Norm Grabinger of Medford.

The crowd was also entertained by a group of Vintage Racers that tour around the Midwest. Heat wins were posted by Mike Hed of Menahga in a 1966 Chevelle. The win in the second heat went to Wisconsin Rapids, WI driver Darrell Bassuener while the feature win was captured Mark May piloting a 1972 Dodge Challenger.

West Salem, Wisconsin's Steve Carlson made a late race pass to best Farmington's Jake Ryan steve_carlsonfor the win in the ASA Midwest Tour's Elko 125. Elko's Dan Fredrickson finished third followed by Donny Reuvers of Dundas and Hampton's Jonathan Eilen.

The NASCAR Whelen All American Series returns to Elko Speedway on Saturday, May 30th featuring Super Late Models, Big 8 Sportsmen, Thunder Cars, Power Stocks, Legends, and Super Hornets. The night will also see the return of the Big Wheel races to the track with live post-race music provided by the Johnny Holm Band. Gates open at 5 p.m., qualifying at 6 p.m. and opening ceremonies at 7 p.m. For more information, contact Elko Speedway at 952-461-7223 (RACE) or visit on-line at www.elkospeedway .com.
