ROYLE AND CRAWFORD CONTINUE WINNING WAYS AT ELKO

Attention: open in a new window.

Northfield's Adam Royle followed up a "clean sweep" one week earlier, by dominating the NASCAR Super Late Model feature to score his second consecutvie victory, while New Prague's Nick Crawford scored his second win in three weeks in the Big 8 Sportsman to highlight the NASCAR Whelen All American Series action Saturday May 9, 2009 at Elko Speedway.

As the action began for the NASCAR Super Late Models, it appeared that Farmington's Jake Ryan might have found the keys to success that had escaped him in the early portion of the 2009 season as he led qualifying (13.716 seconds) over Dundas' Donny Reuvers and Royle and followed suit with a victory in the Semi Feature over Reuvers and Royle, but the tables turned in the 40 lap headliner. At the drop of the green, Sauk Center's Nick Panitzke took the early lead from Bloomington's Mark Lamoreaux, with Royle beginning his march on lap four, sliding under Lamoreaux for second. Just two laps later, Royle bolted around Panitzke for the lead and quickly established a seven car length advantage as both Ryan and Reuvers began their march. As the fans were treated to some of the seasons best side by side action, it was Royle who kept a smooth, consistent line as he pulled away for the impressive win, marking two straight trips to victory lane with Ryan second, Reuvers third, New Market's Jason Schneider fourth and New Germany's Matt Goede fifth.

In the Big 8 Sportsman, New Prague's Nick Crawford and Lakeville's Kevin Lutz treated the fans to a great side by side duel for the lead over the first nine laps of the 30 lap main. Finally on lap 10, nick_crawfordCrawford was able to take the lead, with Jordan's Jonny Hentges ducking under Lutz for second, with Lakeville's Joe Garofalo continuing Lutz' slide two laps later. As Crawford continued to ride the point, the action slowed on lap 16 as Elko's Tom Kamish and New Market's Steve Schultz locked horns in turn three bringing out the only caution. On the ensuing restart, Hentges looked under Crawford repeatedly, but was unable to wrest the lead away, with the young hotshoe scoring his third consecutive top two finish and second win in three weeks, with Hentges second, Garofalo third, Kamish rebounding for fourth and Prior Lake's Doug Brown fifth.

The Great North Legends a familiar face and name was smiling when the checkers flew as Prior Lake's Jaycen Brockhouse scored his third feature win of 2009. The action started quickly as Lakeville's Brent Keske and St. Michael's Michael Dick locked up entering turn one as the green flew, forcing a complete restart after a quick cleanup. On the second attempt, it was Buffalo's Pat Zandstra taking the point before Brockhouse soared by on lap seven to take a lead he wouldn't relinquish as he withstood Zandstra's challenges early on and then Sauk Center's Dirk Henry late to score the win, with Henry second and Belle Plaine's Dillon Bogges posting a career best third place finish.

The Thunder Cars saw Nerstrand's Kris Morelan take the point as the green flew, before Lonsdale's Brent Kane powered by on lap three to take a lead he would hold in scoring the win, with Morelan steady in second and Dundas' Ted Reuvers holding off Lakeville's Chris Marek for third in an entertaining race long battle.

In the Power Stock division, Jordan's Luke Schmitt fenced with Farmington's Dillon Sellner for the luke_schmittearly lead, as Shakopee's James Wiebusch and Dundas' Kelly Wefel battled to join the top three. Schmitt was finally able to edge away from Sellner on lap 13 to take the lead and eventual win, with Sellner's night lost to the technical staff in post race tech as irregularities in the suspension sent him home with a a DNF, moving Elko's Rob Schnickels (who had worked around Wiebusch with three to go) to second and Wiebusch holding on for third.

Topping off the action were the Super Hornets and Medford's Shawn Grabinger and Lonsdale's aaron_hopkinsJeremy Brainerd paired off in a great battle for the point before Burnsville's Aaron Hopkins joined the battle on lap nine working under Grabinger. Over the final six laps, the question was whether Hopkins would be able to track down Brainerd which he did finally taking the point on lap 13 of 15 enroute to the win, with Brainerd second and Grabinger third.

The NASCAR Whelen All American Series action will take a week off as Elko Speedway presents the always popular EVE OF DESTRUCTION on Saturday May 16th with Monster Trucks, a Dukes of Hazzard jump and much more!
